Tangibles

We're birds of a feather, words in a letter
One that I wrote not too long ago
That I never gave you for fear of the truth
That which will save you is precisely what plagues you
And I didn't believe in destiny and the unseen
Stuck on tangibles, circumstance, and what I hold
In my hands when I clench them and make a fist
And I see the veins bulging in the skin on my wrist
You're an apple on a tree, I'm a worm who wants to eat
So if you're going down then I'm going down with you
You're a poison in a pond, but I'm a fish who don't belong
So if I go belly-up, then it's not just 'cause of you
And I didn't believe in destiny and the unseen
Stuck on tangibles, circumstance, and what I hold
In my hands when I clench them and make a fist
And I see the veins bulging in the skin on my wrist

It may be hard to accept
But there's no villains or victims in this story
See every once in a while, you can tell a tale of guts
Without the glory
And I know it's not the popular way
People draw that line in the sand, they wanna know who's to blame
And I know you swallowed yourself in shame
But you gotta believe me, darlin', listen when I say...
Don't go feeling guilty, don't even start
It's like I told you once, only I can break my heart
So don't go say you're sorry, no not this time
It's like I said before, it's no one's fault but mine
I've been known in the past
To mistake a streetlight for the moon
But I'll stick with my stance, even if the same can't be said
For you
And I know it's not the popular way
People draw that line in the sand, they wanna know who's to blame
And I know you swallowed yourself in shame
But you gotta believe me, darlin', listen when I say...
Don't go feeling guilty, don't even start
It's like I told you once, only I can break my heart
So don't go say you're sorry, no not this time
It's like I said before, it's no one's fault but mine

Tethered

There’s a snake coiled round my head
Whispering lies into my ear again
His voice sounds as holy as honey and wine
But his words fill my heart up with sickness and dread
And if I listen to him again
Say goodbye to my soul
Cause he’s the devil he is
Come calling to settle his score
He creeps through my dreams
His words send me reeling
His voice sounds as holy as honey and wine
(Appears in the gloam and rattles my bones)
When all of my sins flash in front of his eyes
There ain’t never no hiding away
And as much as I pray
For some change in the weather
Old Nick’ll be standing right near me
And leering each time that my shame has got me…
But you don’t see me running it’s way either, now do you?
Peel all the illusion away from your eyes
And my eyes too
We’ll find that devil has taken his place
And we’ll give him his due
And if I listen to him again
Say goodbye to my soul
Cause he’s the devil he is
Come calling to settle his score
He creeps through my dreams
His words send me reeling
His voice sounds as holy as honey and wine
(Appears in the gloam and rattles my bones)
When all of my sins flash in front of his eyes
There ain’t never no hiding away
And as much as I pray for some change in the weather
Old Nick’ll be standing right near me
And leering each time that my shame has got me…
He creeps through my dreams
His words send me reeling
His voice sounds as holy as honey and wine
(Appears in the gloam and rattles my bones)
When all of my sins flash in front of his eyes
There ain’t never no hiding away
And as much as I pray for some change in the weather
Old Nick’ll be standing right near me
And leering each time that my shame has got me tethered

Bent

Tap, tap, tap, tap, tappin' your shoe
I know I wanna make some noise with you
But who said I had the time
To let you nest so comfortably in my mind?
One by one now you're breakin' my bones
Using your words instead of sticks and stones
But I'm learning how to heal up fast
So I don't spend the summer stuck in a body cast
And I am bent over these handlebars again
Pedaling hard against the constant changing wind
I've got a helium head floating high above the city
It'll gladly come down if you could give me a source of sanity
And I am bent over these handlebars again
Pedaling hard against the constant changing wind
And my flamingo head is buried deep inside the snow
It'll gladly come out if you can give me a saner place to go
